The gritty, awe-inspiring true story that takes you right into the heart of the Iraq war from Sunday Times No.1 bestseller Sgt. Dan Mills

'One of the best first-hand accounts of combat that I've ever read' Andy McNab
'A truly stunning story. I have read this 4 times and it's still as captivating now as the first time' 5***** Reader Review

'We all saw it at once. Half a dozen voices screamed 'Grenade!' simultaneously. Then everything went into slow motion . . .'
_______

April 2004.

Dan Mills and his platoon of snipers fly into southern Iraq, part of an infantry battalion sent to win hearts and minds. They were soon fighting for their lives.

Back home we were told they were peacekeeping.

But there was no peace to keep.

Because within days of arriving in theatre, Mills and his men were caught up in the longest, most sustained fire fight British troops had faced for over fifty years.

This awe-inspiring account tells of total war in throat-burning winds and fifty-degree heat, blasted by mortars and surrounded by heavily armed militias - you won't be able to put this down.

_______

'A gritty speedball-run. Strong, cohesive and complete . . . It plugs the reader straight into the blood and guts of the action' The Times

'Full-on graphic detail . . . You can practically taste the dust and the cordite'

From the Back Cover

'Contact front! Contact front!' Immediately we were down on our
knees and aggressively returning fire. Then we slipped away into pairs.
While one bloke got up and sprinted 10 feet back up the alleyway, the other
emptied all the rounds he could in the direction of the gunmen. Then the
pair swapped roles. Fire and Manouevre, fire and manouevre.

It was like the bank robbery scene in 'Heat'. It's amazing how well you
remember it all when you need to. But still the RPK poured lead at us. A
whole burst went straight between Smudge's legs as he was stopping to turn
and cover me.

'Average?!' I said as we looked at each other in amazement. Then we

The true grit of the British Army, especially Y Comp, couldn't be told better and it was truly a great read that immerses you into the horrors of battle.

Dan and his men deserve all the recognition they received and continue to receive with the reviews from avid readers of his book.

Hats off to you boys, and thank you for your devoted service.

    Exceptional book for many reasons.
    Well written. Insightful. Descriptive.

If you're interested in reading about what is asked of and required from a soldier during war fighting conditions then this book is for you.

I hope and pray that homo sapiens will someday find a way to put war behind us. Until then, to those amongst us who answer the call, you have my respect, and my sincere condolences.

I'm not or never have been a military reader. Although my curiosity was aroused by American Sniper recently released on film, I thought it would be a good time to change genre. I decided to read the reviews first before buying. Glad I did as I was not impressed but found Sniper One mentioned and opted for this instead.

There is nothing gung-ho or flag waving bout their mission. It is a matter of fact story about guys who show great courage and professionalism in s*** circumstances.

As typical as any bunch of lads together, the range of personalities range from daft to intellectual providing humour and comrade ship in the harshest conditions. I'm not one for writing reviews (the above remarks show why). However, I was compelled as this is the best read I have had in years. Great respect to Dan Mills and his team.

I was recommended this book by an ex-forces colleague of mine, and I wasn't disappointed, I simply couldn't put it down.

Written with such detail and clarity, you can almost sense the sweat running into your eyes, the adrenaline coursing through your system and the cordite assaulting your nostrils whilst reading. The insights into the close-knit sniper community and the wider regimental camaraderie were inspiring, touching and, at times, laugh-out-load funny. I now know that, should I find myself on a camping holiday with an ex-sniper, I should post armed guards around my rucksack!! This book has blockbuster film written all over it, and I for one would be first in the queue to see it.

I would say this book is worth every penny despite the Kindle version being more expensive than the printed one, shame on you Amazon.

From a purely selfish perspective, (what follows is NOT intended to be a spoiler) I am disappointed that Dan Mills has since left the Army as there is now no chance of a sequel, but then I suppose being responsible for a one-hit wonder is better than churning out an endless stream of mediocrity.

Thank you Sgt. Mills, I salute you.

One of the best books I have ever read and my favourite military book so far - and I've read quite a few. A couple of things other reviews I read didn't touch on.

    - I found this a very very funny book. I laughed out loud, loudly in more than 5 places. Things like his descriptions of the crazy characters of his men; the mischief with the dating site, the fight between Louis and John; his sniper poo episode; the behaviour of the something-TAG sergeants in the lethal firefight. These and more were made very very funny by his telling. Perhaps Sgt Dan Mills could be a comedian in his next career.

    - Dan Mills and his men expressed a genuine love of fighting. They were genuinely eager to be involved in multiple firefights, perversely happy to be shot at and incessantly mortared. He didn't try to come across as peace-loving or reluctant to be in the situation. Quite the opposite - he said how much the loved the challenge. I've never seen military characters portrayed in quite this way before.

    - They were very good at their job. And they deeply loved their work. As expressed by their open mouthed admiration of "The Beast" - a new sniper weapon. And the babbling adolescent anticipation they showed before the F16 attack on a mortar position.

    - The ending was a bit poignant. It was a bit disappointing that these super soldiers were unable to find better work after leaving the army. I wasn't too happy about that part. It seemed ridiculous than an elite soldier would end up as a security guard at a university. But I suppose that's the nature of a free society.

What an amazing account of a group of men thrown together in time of war. It really is a "can't put down" book.
Acts of heroism, forces humour in the face of adversity from men who if you were sat across from them in a pub or train carriage you would never guess what they went through. A great read I would recommend to anyone.

Wow, what they don't capture in the news! The reality of what soldiers must endure is well documented in this book. The need for strong leadership, strong men both physically and mentally and unflinching backup is obvious. War is needless, but, if war it is, then men like these are our heroes. The unbelievable challenges of that level of fighting would destroy most, but certain characters can withstand this hell. Sadly we know PTSD can affect a lot who can't shake the drama and trauma experienced...they deserve our on going gratitude and support. This book describes the very basics of combat and how the human soul must break through it's time honed polite humanistic approach, to be so desensitised as to take a life and move on to the next...to defend life for life. I hope with all my heart another man need not write such a story...sadly, such as this world we live in, there could be many more. Thank you for giving us the insight described so well, you and the men you mention ...and the unmentioned, you have given so much in so many ways, you can always stand proud.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lebendig, authentisch, lustig, einfach genial, Kaufempfehlung!

Nice book by Sgt. Mills. Although the book's size is small but it surely packs a punch. The book describes how the guys race to keep themselves alive while in Iraq's unforgiving battlefield. Totally awesome book. Worth the price.
