Teleport This (Small Universe Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 360 ratings

Girls, guys, robots, teleportation; spaceships, space battles, space pirates – it’s all mashed-up, along with a deeper understanding of Tarzan's thought process when he first met another human being, then seasoned with just the right amount of humor and wit and served up with a liberal amount of alcohol throughout the Small Universe series.

Teleport This is a fast-paced, science fiction adventure without the extra heavy baggage found in hardcore space operas or the ultra-wackiness found in satirical sci-fi novels. The story starts off in a contemporary Earth setting, add in a couple guys and a girl, turn on the teleport and away they go, tripping and stumbling into and across a larger universe.
As they travel about, our heroes become hopelessly entangled in the universal forces of confusion, desperately trying to find their way back to Earth in one piece while possibly purchasing a working lightsaber or two along the way. An enjoyable read not only for sci-fi fans, but for anyone that likes witty dialogue and interesting characters coupled with an absorbing storyline.

So let's go and don't forget the tequila and chips.

I must say, I was really surprised by this book.

Being a big fan of Douglas Adams since my teenage years (quite a while LOL) I immediately took to this book like a duck to water and couldn't put it down. Not quite as polished as Adams, but definitely giving the his fans something to read since his demise.

The story is funny and had me chuckling in quite a few places. Its a good story and I have already downloaded the sequel to my Kindle ready for the adventures of Simon and Gilbert.

There were a few niggles, like two or three grammatical mistakes and the layout for the Kindle was annoying with a large left margin, but this is me nit picking.

Here's to many more adventures and hoping that Christopher writes many more adventures in the future as I am definitely a new fan.

I really liked this, more than I thought I would. Funny in places with references to STAR TREK/STAR WARS with tongue firmly in cheek. The best analogy I can come up with is a mix of Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy and Bill & Teds Excellent Adventure but with a more intelligent pair of protaganists.

Gilbert & Simon build a teleport device in a warehouse and get beamed into a whole lot of trouble, mainly caused by a rogueish conman/genius/scoundrel called Jon who is in witness protection and being chased by the big time crimelord. He ends up inadvertently giving Gilbert & Simon the time of thier lives. All in all a very entertaining read and like other reviewers I have purchased the second story Soul to Soul .

I hope it's as much fun as the first.

Worth the money, a good light hearted read, if you're into Douglas Adams/Terry Pratchette/Jasper Fforde this is for you.

I enjoyed this book very much, it's well written, light hearted, fun and very different. Ticks all the boxes for me as a Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett fan. Bought the next one, Soul to Soul, immediately after finishing "Teleport this" (this afternoon) and made a special trip to a wifi area to download it. Hope there will be more to come, I love the characters, and the idea has so much potential. It's a good copy too, didn't notice any typo's at all. Wish it had been longer.

I really enjoyed this - the start was full of surprises and promised an interesting and different twist on the first contact principle. It tended to drift away from the science fiction aspect more into an adventure as the story progressed, but the story line was still maintained. Well written and excellent dialogue throughout, with just the right amount of tongue-in-cheek humour.

"Teleport This" is a science fiction comedy about two geeky scientists who make contact with aliens and travel around in space.
There is an obvious comparison, which I could not stop myself from making, with the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" trilogy (of five).
Also fairly obviously, the comparison comes out in favour of Hitchhiker's.

That out of the way, this was a quick and easy read with enough characterisation to keep my interest, and a quick fire comedic tone.

The kindle version suffers in places from what I assume is lack of editing. There are a number of paragraphs, particularly in the first half of the book, that change tense part way through and there are some strange spelling choices (buy/by and know/now) throughout. However these are rare enough to only be a slight - though avoidable - annoyance and didn't distract me too much from the story.

I am a bit of a sci-fi geek, and this ticked all the right boxes for me. Imaginative, funny, well thought out, (like why so many aliens look human) well written, believable (as all great scifi should be - you believe their version of reality is a real possibility) and left me wanting to know more of the adventures of the characters.

Trapezian wine should become as read about as the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster!

The book was SO much better than I thought it would be - I would've paid double for such a great story which I will definitely read again - after I've read the next one "soul to soul"!

This is a lighthearted sci-fi comedy, not quite Douglas Adams standard but definitely heading in that general direction. The characters are great, the plot keeps moving at an impressive pace, and you'll enjoy pretty much every page along the way. I just finished it, and I've immediately bought the sequel to read next.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Read
Reviewed in the United States on 28 October 2009
Teleport This is a great example of witty and fun science fiction. The characters are very entertaining and the story moves along very quickly, without getting bogged down in technobabble. It begins on present day earth, focused on main characters Gilbert and Simon, but they're quickly complemented with a variety of other characters, specifically a couple of take charge girls that set the boys straight as they bop around the universe. It's fun watching Gilbert and Simon develop from geeks to guys over the course of the story. The best part is that you don't need to be a science fiction lover to enjoy this book.

Sci-fi fans will appreciate the semi-veiled references to other books and movies, but anyone looking for a good read will enjoy the story and its humorous dialogue.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fun, Light Read
Reviewed in the United States on 18 April 2014
An enjoyable read that doesn't pretend to be more than it is. It's not "serious" science fiction that requires one to ponder the value of human life or the existence of God. It's more like "Big Bang Theory" meets Popular Mechanics magazine with a touch of "Harold and Kumar".

The characters are likable enough (to borrow a phrase from President Obama), the pace is good and the storyline isn't burdened with a lot of pseudo-technical mumbo jumbo about how the teleport process works. It's just a little adventure story about a couple of nerdy guys who are in a bit over their head.

The book is in need of a serious editor with a strong hand. The silly grammatical errors that litter the book are inexcusable. Even MS Word has a serviceable grammar engine that could have been used in a pinch. It is to be hoped that the author will attend to the basic housekeeping of presenting properly constructed English prose in future efforts.

Quibbles aside, I'd recommend the book as a quick, enjoyable read. I'd read more from this author.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sorry, but...

I tried to finish this book, I really did, especially since a number of the reviews were so positive. The witty dialogue was humorous at first but it ran dry halfway through. Didn't find the characters that well developed either.
