About the authors
Joe Konrath has written over twenty novels in the Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels thriller series. They do not have to be read chronologically to be enjoyed, but the order is: Whiskey Sour, Bloody Mary, Rusty Nail, Dirty Martini, Shot of Tequila, Fuzzy Navel, Cherry Bomb, Dead On My Feet, Serial Killers Uncut (with Blake Crouch), Shaken, Stirred (with Blake Crouch), Dying Breath, Everybody Dies, Rum Runner, Last Call, White Russian, Shot Girl, Chaser, Old Fashioned, Bite Force, and Witch Brew. Wow, that's a lot of Jack.
If you like your thrillers on the dark side, check out the Konrath Dark Thriller Collective, which includes the books The List, Origin, Afraid, Trapped, Endurance, Haunted House, Webcam, Disturb, What Happened To Lori, The Nine, Second Coming, and Close Your Eyes.
Joe also wrote the Stop A Murder mystery puzzle series, where you become the sleuth and solve brain teasers to try and catch a killer.
He also wrote the sci-fi trilogy, Timecaster, Timecaster Supersymmetry, and Timecaster Steampunk. Even if you don't think you like sci-fi, give them a try. They feature Joe's well-known characters from his other series, and are insane.
With Ann Voss Peterson he wrote the Codename: Chandler thrillers, including Flee, Spree, Three, Hit, Exposed, Naughty, Fix (with F. Paul Wilson), Rescue, and Free.
And, finally, he writes erotica under the pen name Melinda DuChamp, also with Ann Voss Peterson. Those books are probably too spicy for you, so only the brave and bold should seek them out.
Joe writes a lot. You should probably read everything.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 January 2014Fantastically written, as one comes to expect with Konrath/Kilborn's novels, and this one has a very different feel, much more 'technothriller' than the 'horror-thriller' books of his I've also read (Afraid & Trapped)... I think this is my favourite of his books I've read so far but I have plenty more still to read so who knows.... The other 'technothriller' of Konrath's I've read is Origin and I much preferred this one (The List). As usual, likeable and well-developed characters and while the plot gets a bit ridiculous in parts, as far as being believable goes, if you let yourself be swept through with the fantastical ideas, it really is an incredible notion and superbly put together. To say more would spoil for people not yet read this great book. I also LOVED the humour in this story, very funny in parts and I think Bert is my favourite character because of this (his slug bug game was hilarious). Highly recommend.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 February 2025Very good book, first time trying this author.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 July 2014I've never yet found a Konrath / Kilborn story I haven't enjoyed. Some are good, some are better, but you never get a bad one. This one concerns a bunch of people (unknown to each other) who have been the unwitting subjects of medical research. The financial sponsor of this research later decides maybe it's not a good idea to have these subjects around. The story is written with Konrath's usual dry humour and easy writing style. Detailed descriptions of DNA and genetics (well, detailed so far as my knowledge of the subject) bring a touch of realism to a story which might be (maybe still is?) too tongue-in-cheek. Free when I got it (lucky me) but still worth current £2.44. I still can't understand how "List", "Origin", and "Disturb" were all rejected by publishers. Either Konrath's self-confessed updates made a huge difference or publishers want their bumps felt. All 3 stories are better than Crichton or equivalent.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 January 2013Well I can say that over the last year or so the bargain basement books on amazon have become a guilty pleasure. Some are so bad they're good and just once in a while you stumble across a gem which is well worth the money. Whilst I wasn't massively impressed with the writers technical skills the story and characters are original enough and well enough developed to keep the reader interested. Funny and thought provoking in equal measure it's well worth the price.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 January 2016I do like Konrath's style, but couldn't give this a five star as I felt that the plot had run away with him on a couple of occasions. Don't get me wrong, it was still an exciting read, but just a little over the edge sometimes - would probably give it four and a half.
Still can't wait to read another - pure escapism and I can easily lose myself in his novels.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 July 2013The plan was to try and find some books to read before bed rather than watching TV, I found this on offer so thought I'd give it a go, the problem was I didn't really get any sleep because I couldn't put it down. As you would expect it's completely out there, but it's great fun to read, it's an easy read, and it's funny too. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who likes a bit of crazy sic-fi, if you like your romance novels or straight comedy then this maybe isn't the book for you, but if you like a bit of fun then give it a go, it won't take you long to get through it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 July 2013Great, really enjoyed it, quite gripping in places, very edge of the seat stuff - an excellent technothriller with some humour mixed in. The characters are quite believable once you get past the original premise of who they are clones of and the yarn proceeds apace to a good ending with ba nice twist. I will read a lot moe of this author's work.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 June 2013This is the first book I've read by this author and it's not my usual read, I like romance and paranormal romance, yes I can hear you all groaning. I've given my old kindle to my dad and while putting books on it for him a couple stood out this being one of them so I thought I'd give it a go and I loved it, yes it was silly in places unbelievablely far fetched in others but I thought it was great and it would make a great movie, I read it back in January but after years of reading other people's reviews I'm making an effort to actually write my own, the purpose of this one is to say that even if this is not the type of book you generally read its worth a shot, I'm glad I did and it's free.

5.0 out of 5 stars Etwas Spannendes zum Schmunzeln

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Techno-Thriller Written by the Author...
... of the Jack-Daniels-Series J.A. Konrath.
>>Book Description:
This is a first for Konrath because it is a real technothriller about a group of ten people who each have tattoos of numbers on the bottoms their feet, and don't know why.
One of them, a Chicago Homicide cop named Tom Mankowski, has had one of these strange tattoos since birth. When he investigates a violent murder and discovers the victim also has a tattooed number, it sets the ball rolling for an adventure of historic proportions.
Because there are the absolute positive and the horrid negative included in this deminishing crowd!
To say more would really give away too much...<<
But I only can tell You, to see those 10 persons fight (and an army of helping hands, heads and feet on both sides...) - and there is a black-belt woman deeply involved - is sheer, pure fun for the fans of thriller mixed with horror mixed with the typical blackest humour the author is able to release...
I had a very interesting evening with this ebook - torn from sheer horror to "give-him-a-right-one into the ..." moments.
Really recommendable for fans of Jack Daniels, Luther Kite (both not present) and I want to know: Mr Konrath - when does the show go on???

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS TECHNO-THRILLER DESERVES TEN STARS!!
This is exactly the type of thriller I am addicted to reading; and Konrath nailed it dead centre. I've never read any of his books before, so I was pleasantly surprised to find this author has expertly crafted a novel riddled with scientific experiments gone haywire, intertwined with political conspiracies; antagonists so terrifying you won't want to sleep with the lights off for at least a week. "The List" is incredibly entertaining and had me guessing right until the end - and all my guesses were for naught as nothing was what it seemed. A brilliantly formulated plot with an utterly shocking and unpredictable ending, held me glued to the edge of my seat for hours on end!
I loved all of the characters. Well, all the good ones, at least. Imagine meeting Abe Lincoln, Joan of Arc, Thomas Jefferson and Albert Einstein (to name a few) in real life. That would be awesome, right? And can you imagine Joan of Arc as a Hollywood producer trained in martial arts who can kick the heck out of...oh, let's say, Vlad the Impaler? No, that's not a spoiler. That's only a microscopic tip of the iceberg called "The List". Because the reader is catapulted headfirst into the action in the first chapter and is given so many hints at what's to come later in the story, my one fear was that it would lose momentum half way through, and then peter out to a mediocre, unsatisfying conclusion. Lucky for me and everyone else who reads this adrenaline-spiking thriller, this does not happen at all. "The List" starts out fast, driven by clever writing, witty, pragmatic characters and knee-jerking plot twists, and manages to keep its breakneck pacing throughout while building up to a stunner conclusion that leaves you wanting more of this magnificent writer's extraordinary creations.
I'm a huge fan of horror, so naturally Stephen King and Dean Koontz are tops on my list, but as from today J.A. Konrath will be added to that list of authors who have perfected the art of sending chills down my spine with their fear-inducing works. "The List" is mostly a thriller but has enough shocking scenes and malevolence in this fast paced heart-stopping story to satisfy any horror fanatic's lust for the macabre. I will most definitely be reading more of Konrath's books!

3.0 out of 5 stars Fair
An honest thriller with an interesting twist and non-stop action, but not very anchored in believability.... it’s entertaining and you can kind of tell it was written with a movie script in mind...
