- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 May 2025I loved this book! A love story for the modern age (social media guru and grumpy historian) a story that has you smiling and laughing all the way through with highly relatable and likeable characters - I couldn't put it down.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 January 2019I felt immediate empathy with all of the characters and the link to Eliza Doolittle, in Vanity Fair, came through in Annie Higgins character, which added to the story.
Social media and self promotion as a means to achieving your goals is new to me, so I learnt and appreciated learning. Therefore, please read this book if you're new, or even if you're an old-hand to platforms, and maybe especially if you know nothing about them at all.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story, it had just the right amount of humour, combined with friendship, to keep the pace zipping along. The tiny predictability lost it a star, but without that the ending wouldn't have been as satisfying. Absolute escapism.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 July 2018Man I loved this book! I cannot tell you how amazing it is reading a book that has a major focus on social media from someone who knows a thing or two about social media. Yes this book has a great story and great characters, but my takeaway from this is seeing accurate social media representation of fiction. Not just one aspect of social media either, the time it takes to edit YouTube videos, trying to beat the Instagram algorithm and the perils of tweeting something when you meant to DM it-Loved it!
Ok so we have some wonderful characters in this book, our lead is Annie Higgins (like Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady) and she is so easy to relate to because she has the yearning for being able to go to bed without first checking her inbox and wake up in the morning without checking her inbox before anything else. She is incredibly hard working and I really admired her passion and her ability to go the extra mile but can also recognise the toll that takes on her personal life! Her business partner Miranda is the perfect Ying to her Yang and they just really work as best friends.
Then we have Sam, a historian, a bit of a recluse and someone who definitely has more to him than meets the eye. I loved how slowly Sam opened up to the rest of that characters in this book, how he had great values that he stuck to no matter what and that he provided someone for me to fall in love with, never mind any of the other characters.
I said this on social media, but I just love all the British references throughout this novel. If you're living in the UK and reading it, you might not notice them at first but this is a true love story to British culture, British Mannerisms and British food! You can tell that this author is a Brit living in the US because the Fray Bentos pie here, the Hob Nobs there and the references to Richard Madeley and This Morning were truly magnificent, not to mention the British swearing!
This storyline follows some of my favourite tropes but bucks the trend with a lot of gender reversal in the whole 'boy meets girl' side of things and I just loved it. I wanted to keep on reading, read past my bedtime and got up early to finish this book because it was truly truly fabulous. This is a standalone novel and so if this is your first foray into Lindsey's writing, this would be a great place to start. If you are an uber fan like me, she has done us proud-a wonderful read!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 July 2021Annie doesn't have time for love, she is way too busy trying to make her new company a success and her social life has taken a hit. She is putting her all into her business and when the advertising agency across the hall makes fun of them, a bet is spurred. Annie has to make a random stranger from their office building Instagram famous is just 30 days. She needs to get twenty thousand followers in thirty days...
The target chosen is Dr Samuel Page PhD who is a historian and lives in the dark ages without social media. He is grumpy and lacks complete social skills but Annie is determined to win, no matter the cost and whether Sam likes it or not. Samuel is a reluctant participant but when Annie offers to help him in his personal life, he slowly gets on board. Throughout the course of the month, Annie starts to learn more about herself and what she wants out of life. What happens when the 30 days are up...
I adore Lindsey Kelk's books and think she is a brilliant writer. Annie is a strong and sassy main character, she fights for what she wants and doesn't give up easy. She has worked hard to get where she is in life and doesn't take anything for granted. I really felt for her family situation and Sam couldn't have put it better than at her dad's surprise birthday.
It was an easy to read book and I got through it fairly quick. A romance in the modern ages and if you love social media then this one is for you.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 July 2018I bought this book knowing that it was written by Lindsey Kelk so if it wasn’t great then it’d be pretty darn good, it turns out it was great.
Annie was such a great leading lady, she was quirky but didn’t have such a quirky personality that she was unrealistic, she was fun. Sam was such a good romantic interest. I did find it difficult to picture him but after a few chapters I imagined him to look like Eric from True Blood, I ignored the curly hair he had in the book because I just couldn’t picture what was being described. The supporting characters were really good too. Martin, Charlie, Mir and Brian were involved enough to show they were a big party of Annie’s life but they weren’t given too much page time that I got fed up about hearing about them. There were many funny moments, usually a book of this genre makes me smile but I actually laughed on a few occasions, this is not rare when reading a book by Lindsey Kelk.
I really want a sequel, maybe a year down the line, I think there’s potential for more Annie and Sam stories and I want to read them. If it’s not a full sequel then just a Xmas wedding short ebook or Sam on This Morning, please Lindsey!
I’d love to know if The Hip Historian Page I found on Instagram has been set up for this book and will reveal future books etc. It has no followers or posts (when I looked this morning) so I wasn’t brave enough to follow them!

4.0 out of 5 stars "I happen to think you’re fairly close to perfect." -Dr. Samuel Page
I must confess that what drew me in initially to "One in a Million" was the nerd to hot-nerd transformation/opposites attract love story.
But it was Annie that kept me around, she is so fun, easy going and so easy to love....I was surprised it took Sam so long to open his eyes; I mean his anti-social cat falling for Annie was a huge giveaway.
Sam was a swoon-worthy leading man that at times reminded me of Mr. Darcy.
All in all, this was such a cute romcom read. The reason it wasn’t 5⭐️ is because I wish they got together sooner so we could enjoy their story unfolding.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5-never-wanted-this-book-to-end stars! Contemporary and wonderfully timely
Not wanting a book to end is the highest of honours I feel for a book, almost across all genres, maybe not a murder mystery but you get the drift! I HEART Lindsey's standalone books ;) , don't get me wrong, her series' are quite amazing too but to wrap up a heartfelt, funny story in one book is like eating a scrumptious meal. This book is her best standalone work, yet. I could name a million reasons why (yes, pun intended)
What I loved about this book:-
1) The almost entire focus on Annie, her career was a meat of this book. I enjoyed the subtle hint at Annie's dependency on social media, her palpitations when she was not around her phone or when it was low on charge. This reflection of society while not seeming preachy was brilliant. Annie is a winning character. She is funny, flawed, extremely good at her job but down on luck on men. What was refreshing was she never dwelt on it. She just kept making plans and almost working herself to death but she never got bogged down! She's your best kind of heroine to root for
2) Aah Dr. Samuel Page (not Sam ;)) almost diametrically opposite of our Annie but in the most wonderful way. He was a historian, cared about obscure facts that nobody knew about and was unfriendly, curmudgeon and hated all things social media. To make him an internet sensation was very interesting to read and also the whole boyfriend bootcamp was fun. We have read the whole makeover and realizing he/she was a swan behind the ugly duckling things before; but this book does not feel shallow.
3) No insta-love. God, I hate contemporary instant attraction books, this book was life-like with normal characters and slow-burn. The romance was just a part of the book, the friendships and careers were almost as important. The book happens over a month, but there's so much depth that when the characters fall in love you don't feel that it's been only a month. You are absolutely invested and you are feverishly turning the pages to see how it ends
4) The humour, (it's almost a given for Lindsey's books) I was smiling and chortling often. It's a clean book with sizzling chemistry and banter, not many authors can accomplish that. I loved Miranda and Brian and even the interns. Most important I loved Annie's job, the subtle references to gender politics of running a company was very timely. I loved the random historical facts from the book, those were definitely interesting
I loved every bit of this book. I was waiting for this book ever since the announcement and this book matched all my expectations and then some! Cannot wait for more from Lindsey, especially the stand-alone books. True winner

Comme d'habitude une pépite ! j'adore cet auteur et ce roman n'a pas fait l'exception. Il est très actuel et les personnages géniaux. J'ai passé un très bon moment de lecture, et j'attends avec impatience son roman suivant.
