Midlife Crisis (The Time Bubble Book 7) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 569 ratings

If you could live any six days of your life over again, which would you choose?

Kicked out of his job, nagged by his wife, and ignored by his kids, nothing is going right for Richard Kent. Increasingly disillusioned with modern life, he spends his days reminiscing about a youth he will never see again: or will he?

When a mysterious benefactor offers him six trips to the past, Kent seizes the chance, starting with a journey back to 1984 to buy his first record. Later trips include revisiting an unfulfilled teenage crush, plus a chance to wreak revenge on his malevolent boss armed with nothing but a large rubber Brontosaurus!

Time travel fans will love this delightful and heartfelt novel, crafted with a delicious touch of dark comedy. It can be enjoyed standalone or as part of the series.

If you were given the chance to travel back in time, reliving a selected 6 days of your life which days of your life would you choose?

Richard Kent has been chosen by an angel he meets on top of a multi storey car park as he's about to jump and end his life to go back and relive 6 days of his choice. This is an exciting read and will have you thinking about your own life and what you valued about your past and would like to re live. It's a great concept to explore. But it's not as simple as you think. What if you couldn't change anything like taking lottery numbers back with you? Kent goes back not to change anything but to live in an extra universe, like a "save as" document in order to come to terms with his present and to consider his future. He settles a few old scores, relives some special moments and learns to appreciate his life more. From shoving a plastic dinosaur up his boss's arse to mixes laxatives in a friend's drink to sleeping with the younger version of his wife he does so much in just 6 selected days.

This is brilliant and Jason's finest yet!

This book is definitely up there with Class of '92 as being my favourite book in the series so far. Richard Kent is 42, overweight, very unhappy with his lot in life and has just found out he had been made redundant. So all in all he is not a happy bunny! He decides to end it all but is stopped by an "angel" appearing who offers him the chance to relive any 6 days of his life that he chooses.

This is where the fun really starts. As a similar age to Richard Kent, I could really get the appeal of this and think a lot of people would love to have the chance to go back in time and relive their happiest days - or even redo things that hadn't gone well - I know I would! I could also really associate with the character's joy in seeing all the things he loved when he was younger and had forgotten about - Top of the Pops and Woolworths Pic 'n' Mix are just two that spring to mind!

All in all this was a very enjoyable read and I practically read the whole book in one go, I just could not put this down. Very highly recommended.

I liked the concept of this book. Richard Kent, in his forties, overweight, unfit, unhappy and recently made redundant from his job as a policemen is in a bad place, when a strange being offers him the chance to relive six days of his choice from his past. On consecutive nights he goes back to re-experience key days from his life giving him the chance to do them differently. I think that this is a great idea and it certainly gets you thinking how would you use those six days? The revenge on his Police boss seemed to me a bit childish and unnecessary, but the different occasions are generally interesting to read to see what his priorities are and how he handles them. Whilst, in an almost Christmas Carol like process, Richard does seem benefit from these experiences, he really does not behave much differently between his trips back to the past, and it would have been nice to see much more reflection and action based on his experiences. His interactions with his wife and children are minimal throughout. The author has clearly done some research and/or has a good memory for some of the periods covered and and I did feel the nostalgia (Whatever did happen to Beef and Onion crisps?). Although the 'rules' on his trips back might have prevented it, you might have thought that he might have used a day to illuminate an old unsolved police case, but he doesn't seem to even consider this. It is an interesting read, but seems to drift a bit without a clear direction or much drama. The final choice of day is a bit odd and did not make much sense to me as it would seem to me that he could not really satisfy the requirement he is given of not allowing that day to influence his future actions. The ending is then very sudden as if the author had just run out of time or interest and for me was fairly unsatisfying. We never get to see if and how the overall experience changes Richard. I realise that this is part of a series of books and maybe reading more would give more of an overall plot and greater depth to the characters, but based on this one there was no real incentive to rush out and read the others (although I expect I will read more at some point).

This is the seventh in the author's Time Bubble series. None of the main regular characters are in this one, it centres on the life of Richard Kent, a disgruntled ex-policeman turned pub landlord, who has turned up in some of the earlier novels. At age 42 in 2018 he is suicidally depressed by the way his life has turned out. A guardian angel offers him a chance to relive six days in his life, from buying his first record in 1984, dating his dream girl in 1994 and attempting to foil a robbery in 2013. It turns out he cannot make any direct changes to the past, though he can learn lessons to put the past in perspective and improve his mental attitude for the future (as well as gaining revenge on some unpleasant types in the process). This was rather different from the other previous novels in the series, though I enjoyed some of the reminiscences of the 80s and 90s.

I've now read 7 books in the series which tells it's own story (pun intended!). These books are consistently really really good. They take me away from the daily grind of life and help me escape. The stories and characters build fantastically well and there's nothing predictable about any of them. All I can say is Jason I hope you're busy working on a few more!!

An engaging premise, and an enjoyable tale. You will not regret buying this book. I may well look out other tales in this loose series.

I’m always looking for books with a different premise than the typical love story, mystery, etc. and this book delivers. The main character is given a chance to relive six days of his life, and the descriptions of daily life in each time period are spot on. I felt like I was there too! Loved it!

It's like a modern day "Christmas Carol" in November. Many what-ifs are explored (revenge, heroship, lust, lost youth, hitting it big, being a dad) and we get to living vicariously thru Kent and his trips to the past. Ayres creates a great character that explains what midlife should mean to us. His writing style is fun to read and done well. It is all connected to his other universe. I look forward to other LONGER books in this series.

I like these books! My only problem with this one is that I read Time Bubble first, and Kent was a very unlikable character in that book. But the book is still good and I recommend it.
